Out With A Bang!

August 4, 2008

Trust me on this one, your guests will never stop talking about a fireworks display at the end of your wedding or event.  The venue we had the event at even thinks it was the most fabulous soiree they have ever had!

I have to say that coordinating this “Ta Da!” moment was one of those times where I think to myself, “I can’t believe they pay me to do this!”  It was so fun to see the surprise of all of the guests when the first firework exploded and the sheer enjoyment that followed for the next 9 minutes.  (I even wished all my friends and family were there to see it!)

Here are my tips if you want to have your own fireworks display:

  • Make sure you are legal – Find out from the City if they not only allow fireworks, but how long it takes to secure a permit and what the process is for obtaining one.  These permits take a lot of time and can even cost several thousands of dollars to fulfill all of the requirements.
  • Give yourself extra time to plan for it - There can be multiple agencies involved that all have their own permit, contract or application.  Be sure that you allow at least a couple weeks more than you need for a lag in communication and other snags that come up.
  • Have the permit with you at the event – In the event the police arrive on scene (which happened to me as a response to “gun or cannon shots”…imagine a cannon these days!)
  • If you don’t have a planner (which of course, I suggest you have) you will need to have someone coordinate the production from when the pyrotechnic crew arrives until after the display.  The crew will need to know exactly where to go and then have a point person to talk to if something were to happen (like the wind picking up).  Be sure that this person has a radio to communicate with the crew at all times.

Go ahead and light up the night sky!  You and everyone at your event will never forget it!
